Company Logo & Name (Part 4)
次回、この記事の日本語版を投稿します。
In the previous posts on Company Logos & Markings (Part 1), (Part 2) and (Part 3) we took a close look at photos sent in by S-san the proud owner of a very well preserved Hikari bicycle manufactured by Dai Nippon Kikai Kougyou. So far, we found a total of 83 "Hikari" markings. There are also plenty of Dai Nippon Kougyou markings (DNB), but we are focusing soley on "Hikari" markings spelled out in English or the Chinese character 光. We have covered the front wheel portion, handlebars, main frame triangle, chaincase and pedals. This week we will continue our count and examine the rear wheel and carrier.
Rear fenders were embossed with the company logo. Typically this logo can be found directly behind the seat tube as shown in the photo below. (1)
The pinstriping on the rear wheel portion is consistent with that which we've previously seen on the front fork, front fender and on all the frame tubes. The logo appears at both ends of the pinstriping and is on each of the seat stays ( a little difficult to see, but in the photo below in the lower left corner you can see the faded Hikari mark at the top of the seat stay. (4)
The bridge connecting the seat stays has the name and logo. (2)
Much like the front fender, the rear fender contains quite a few markings.
The logo appearing at both ends of the pinstriping on both the left and right sides of the fender, and, in two places ie the front and rear portion of the fender. (8)
Although faded, if you enlarge the photo you can see the Hiraki logo at the top of the pinstriping.
At the bottom of the rear fender is a decal. (1)
Some of the reflectors on bicycles from 1950's had the logo designed into the reflector.
The lower fender stay badge and the heads of the hexagonal screws have the Hikari mark. (3)
The upper fender stay badge, as seen in the lower portion of the photo below, has an elaborately enamelled badge with the Hikari symbol and the heads of the hexagonal screws have the Hikari mark. (3)
The rear carrier is exceptional.
First, engraved in the bridge along the neck of the rear carrier is a large Hikari logo.(1)
Second, the widest strut has been cut in a manner that reveals a relief of the Hikari logo. (1)
Third, on the back of the rear carrier is a badge proudly bearing the name of the manufacturer, Dai Nippon Kikai Kougyou. In the background the enamelled fender stay badge can be seen.
The drum (expander) brake has the Hikari mark (hidden by the fender stay shadow it is a little difficult to see.) As we saw with the front wheel, each of the two fender stays bear the Hikari mark and the rim is embossed twice with the logo.(5)
This time we have seen a total of 29 markings. When added to the 31from Company Logos & Markings (Part 1) , 34 from (Part2) and the 18 from (Part 3) that gives us a total of 112.
Stay tuned for the final post and grand total of markings in the next English post.

Never ceases to amaze Richard. Great post. What kind of camera are you using? Getting this type of detail can be really difficult, but you make it seem easy.

Thanks for the kind words JS. I wish I could take the credit, but actually these photos were sent in by a fellow enthusiast. I'd like to see this bicycle up close but it is about six hours by train from here.
