Tamagawa (SEKIDOBASHI) Flea Market

The bi-annual Tamagawa (SEKIDOBASHI) Bicycle Flea Market is just around the corner. Held on the third Saturday of April and October, along the banks of the Tamagawa river, the flea market is a great place to make connections with fellow cyclists of every genre. So mark it on your calendar, Saturday, October 16th.

The early bird gets the worm, so get there early. It is not uncommon for people to set up shop at 6am! Certainly by 7am or 8am things are in full swing and by 12pm most people are closing shop.
If you are a vintage Japanese bicycle fan like myself, I recommend stopping off at 長寿自転車商会 (Choju Jitensha Shokai = Long Life Bicycle Shop). Long life is right, the propriotor has over 50 years in the bicycle business. When I restore bicycles, if I have a question, the propietor has the answer and is literally a living encyclopedia when it comes to vintage Japanese bicycles, espescially utility bicycles from the 1950s. His wealth of information comes not from books, but from experience.
Upon entering the shop one literally steps back in time. Adorning the walls of the tiny shop are vintage Japanese bicycles some dating back over 50 years. A pristine example is the high-end utility bicycle manufactured by the Midori Bicycle Company.
Early sports models and other vintage bicycles line the walls.
The shop is about a 10km ride from SEKIDOBASHI. Just follow the bicycle path along side Tamagawa east bound until you hit Tama Suidobashi take a left on to Setagaya Doori and the shop is about a kilometer ahead on the left.

Hi!
Richard-san, Long time no see.
How was your hometown trip? Thank you for your
note for Sekidobashi flea market. As I missed to go
there last time, I am looking forward to going this time. Yatabe-san has opened Antique Bicycle exhibition on next door. It was great! He was great! I am proud of him very much....

Hi Rumi
Thanks to a very strong yen and great weather our trip back to the US was great.
Yes indeed, Yatabe-san is amazing. I saw his Antique Bicycle exhibition a month ago. To talk to him is to travel back in time when bicycles were the main means of private transportation. He is a living encyclopedia when it comes to vintage bicycles.
Maybe I will see you at the fleat market.

You're killing me with these pictures, Richard! REALLY KILLING ME!!! :)
Seriously, that looks like a great swap meet and a great shop. Wish there were something like it around here.
Take care!

Ha! Come on now Jeff, think about all your posts of the local swap meets in China. You had me drooling over my keyboard.
All kidding aside, it is a great flea market, but not much in the way of vintage roadsters. I have found a few parts though. But, that is what makes vintage bicycle restorations fun, it is the THRILL OF THE HUNT!

BTW: I am assuming the delivery bike (the one with the trapezoidal sign behind the headstock) is yours.
What brand?
What does the sign say?

Good eye Jeff. You are sharp to have picked that out of the video. Yes as you guessed the one with the sign is my bicycle. The sign is an original but I had to have it repainted. The sign says "Komae Ginza (place name) and in Japanese Long Life Bicycle Shop" with the telephone number. The establishment has been in busines for over 50 years.
Cheers
