Guarantee Medals (Part 2)
次回、この記事の日本語版を投稿する予定です。
In the first segment on guarantee medals we learned that these medals, in one form or another, have been around since the 1930's, possibly earlier, and began to fade out, much like the fender ornament, in the 1960's probably due to value engineering which stripped the product of non-added value. We also saw a few unique examples, Nichibei Fuji, Mitsuuma and Zebra.
In this segment we will continue to look at a few of the main brands and their gurantee medals.
First up is Noritsu, manufactured by Okamoto, the first to produce an all Japanese manufactured bicycle, and, was one of the companies which contributed in developing Japan's first automobile. Note the date on the reverse side, 1950.
In addition to the previous example from Nichibei Fuji, let's take a look at a couple of other guarantee medals from Nichibei Fuji.
This particular guarantee medal accompanied the HAO model, Nichibei Fuji's top end model.
This exquisite guarantee medal is from Maruishi Bicycle Company, a company over 100 years old and still manufacturing bicycles today.
The Swift Bicycle Company's logo was an unusual one. A machine gun. The company also used a machine gun for its fender ornament.
Here is a guarantee medal by a very well known bicycle manufacturer, the Sekine Bicycle Company. The front of the guarantee medal boasts that Sekine received the Minster of International Trade and Industry Award.
This guarantee medal, much like that of the Zebra Bicycle Company, is in the shape of the company logo belonging to the Miyata Bicycle Company.
A company still in the business of manufacturing bicycles today.
Last but not least, is a guarantee medal belonging to Mayam Bicycle Company. Mayam was a Nagoya based bicycle manufacturer and made some of the finest heavy duty carrier bicycles.

Wow! A blast from the past! Long time no see. How are you Rumi-san, and what are you doing in Germany? Traveling on vacation?
Happy to hear you enjoyed the Guarantee Medals, yes they truly are c-o-o-l. But so few people know about them. I need to write a book about Showa Bicycles as there are so many cool things about them.
I'm sure there are lots of cool bicycles in Germany as well. I sure would like to visit, but until now no opportunity.
Enjoy your stay and hope we bump into each other after you get back.

One year in Germany. What a wonderful experience. Especially for you since I know you enjoy travel and living in foreign countries.
Considering that the Yen is at a record high, it makes living overseas all the more advantageous.
Enjoy your stay in Germany and I hope to bump into you at Yatabe-san's and have the opportunity to hear all about you and your family's year long stay in Germany.
Enjoy Oktoberfest!
See you!
