Old is Gold Ride (Sekidobashi to Komae Ride)

次回、この記事の日本語版を投稿します。
I'm back from a two week vacation to the USA, thanks for the emails and sorry for the delay in getting back to many of you.

The bi-annual Tamagawa Sekidobashi Bicycle Flea Market (←videos) is just around the corner.  Held on the third Saturday of April and October, along the banks of the Tamagawa river, the flea market is a great place to make connections with fellow cyclists of every genre.  So mark it on your calendar, Saturday, October 15th.

I was unable to attend the last one held on April 16th as it happened to fall on the same day as the taping of a television show I appeared on (Netchu Stadium) for a segment on vintage Japanese bicycles.

The early bird gets the worm, so get there early.  It is not uncommon for people to set up shop before 6am!  Certainly by 7am things are in full swing and by 12pm most people are closing shop.

This year after the flea market, at 12PM I will ride from Sekidobashi to Chojujitensha Shokai (Long Life Bicycle Shop) in Komae City which is a mere 11 Km and a nice easy ride along the Tamagawa bicycle road.  I'm looking for others vintage bicycle (Japanese or foreign) to ride with me in what I hope will eventually develop into an annual  "Old is Gold" ride.

What awaits you at the destination, Chojujitensha Shokai 長寿自転車商会 Long Life Bicycle Shop?  Mr. Yatabe an 82 year young living encyclopedia on vintage bicycles and my dear mentor. Check out an article written by fellow vintage bicycle enthusiast Louis Templado.

Mr Yatabe the proprietor has over 50 years in the bicycle business.  When I restore bicycles, if I have a question, the proprietor has the answer and is literally a living encyclopedia when it comes to vintage Japanese bicycles, especially utility bicycles from the S.  His wealth of information comes not from books, but from experience.

Upon entering the shop one literally steps back in time.  Adorning the walls of the tiny shop are vintage Japanese bicycles some dating back over 50 years.  A pristine example is the high-end utility bicycle manufactured by the Midori Bicycle Company.Img_7679

Mr Yatabe's passion for vintage Japanese bicycles is unlimited.  At 82 he recently restored a Tomishika heavy-duty carrier cycle. This bicycle appeared in a recent issue of JITENSHA SEIKATSU bicycle magazine.

The "Old is Gold" ride follows the bicycle path along side Tamagawa east bound until Tama Suidobashi, left on to Setagaya Doori and the shop is about a kilometer ahead on the left.

Wow ~、Yatabe-san looks good!
I am missing Komae and this tiny good
vintage shop.
How are you doing, Richard-san?
I'm sure you had a good vacation in US.
Last year, I went to the market in Sekidoubashi.
That was fun... Please have fun!

As I bought German bicycle, and I enjoy riding it here. Someday, I will show you.

See you next year!

Good to hear from you Rumi-san. So you got yourself a bicycle? A great way to see Germany and get some exercise as well.

Yes, I had a good time in the US. Back to Massachusetts and then to Key West, Florida to see relatives.

A year will pass quickly so enjoy Germany as much as possible, you will be back here before you know it.

Love the Tomishika! The geometry of the bike looks very similar to a Welby...which I understand is also now defunct. Any connection between those companies?

Jeff
I gotta admit I too have a soft spot for carrier cycles, love the geometry and functionality.
Welby is actually still in business, but not in the heavy-duty carrier bicycles market.

No connection (that I know of) between Tomishika and Welby. Though as you correctly pointed out lots of similarities.

I'm interested in joining the ride! I guess I will run into you at the market. Cheers!

Hi Louis
Good to hear from you. Hard to believe we haven't bumped into each other at Yatabe-san's shop.

Look forward to seeing you (and your ride) at the flea market.
