Why do you exclusively restore Japanese bicycles from around the 1950's?

次回この記事の日本語版を投稿します。

As mentioned in the previous post, this year I will periodically answer some of the more frequently asked question.

Why do you exclusively restore Japanese bicycles from around the 1950's?

The Japanese originally adopted bicycle design and standards from the British.  Japanese bicycles from the 1950's are similar to what I consider to be the finest all-round bicycles, British roadsters/utility bicycles from around 1930's through 1950's  (Raleigh, Sunbeam, BSA, etc).  In terms of form and function roadsters/utility bicycles are extremely durable and many out lived their owners.  These were all steel, low maintenance bicycles complete with full fenders, full chaincases, technically advanced internally geared rear hubs, built-in front or rear dynamos, sprung leather saddles, nickel or chrome plated parts, etc.

Click on the photos below and the general similarities are quite obvious.

In the next English post I will go into greater detail as to why Japanese bicycles from the 1950's are so special.

Hi,

I live in Tokyo and am thinking about a vintage bike. Missed a Fuji noodle shop bike today but have a chance at a Fuji ice shop bike this Friday. Will go look at it and see if it's worth 50,000 yen. Supposed to be complete, but needing rubber. Seems like a lot of money, but cleaned up it might be worth much more. Ice shop sign , carrier,, and support stand are intact. Any advice?

Hi JD
There you are. Thanks for emailing me and sorry the FUJI bicycle didn't turn out to be what you expected. Hang in there and keep looking I'm sure your two-wheeled soul-mate is out there somewhere. If you need help just send me an email with pictures as you did this time.
Happy wheels.
Richard
