Buried Treasure (Nippon Swift Company)

Swift is a well-known bicycle name dating back to 1869 when the Swift Bicycle Company was established in Coventry, England.  Here is an advertisement for a Nippon (Japan) Swift bicycle from around 1924.

The Nippon Swift Company (N.S.C) had a unique logo, a tripod mounted machine gun. The use of this logo probably stems from a patent awarded to the the chairman of the  parent company back in England, Charles Thomas Brock Sangster, in 1916 for the design of a tripod used on Vickers machine guns.

Even ladies bicycles bore a tripod mounted machine gun fender ornament as can be seen in the advertisement below.

Last year I received an email from HS-san whose grandfather's house is a literal time capsule.  Up on the second floor were many wonderful old things that had been asleep for well over half a century, including a few bicycles.

The dust is indicative of how long these bicycles have been asleep.



After wiping away the dust low and behold a genuine Nippon Swift high-grade bicycle.
Note the badge on the seat tube.

For those of you that can read Japanese, note that the characters are read from right to left, signaling that this is most likely pre-WW2.

Fine detail right down to the fender stay badges which bears the company logo.

ペダロコって何でしょうか？

「ペダルロコ」というのは光自転車製造会社のとてもユニークな自転車です。
その名前の由来は２つの言葉の組み合わせです。
「英語の「Pedal」（ペダル）＋「Loco」（機関車)でPedalocoになります。

ペダル回りを良く見て下さい。
どこか少し変わったことありませんか。
クランクアームにまるで機関車のような構造になっています。

最近のことですが、Ｙさんという方から問い合わせを頂きました。

「現在レトロ実用自転車を数台持っております。
その中に大日本機械工業 光自転車 テコ式 と言う運搬自転車のフレームを持っております。 いつかネットで何気なくこのテコ式自転車の資料のような物を見た事を記憶してます が、それ以来見る事が出来ません。
ペダルトスィングアームに汽車のようなシャフトがついていたような？　 色んな方面で聞いてますがやはりこちらのブログで訪ねてみては、と言う方が大半ですのでお聞きしたいのです。
この自転車の事が解るサイトか資料などお解りの事あれば教えて下さい。」

問い合わせを読んで思い出しました。
何年前に確かに見たことがありました。
探してみたら何年か前に写真を投稿したことがあります。

1953年（昭和28年）自転車輸出カタログに載っていました。

また、大分前に昭和自転車愛好家から資料をいただきました。
ご本人は現在ドイツの博物館で修復家として働いています。

出ました！「ペダロコ」


ユニークなテコ式デザイン。.

このペダロコに実際に乗ってみて、テコ式がどの程度まで有効であるか試乗してみたいですね。.
