2 Speed Internally Geared Hub (Part 2)

As mentioned in Part 1 I set out to build a rear wheel for my light carrier Sekine using a 2 speed internally geared hub, 26 x 1 3/4 BE rim and #13 gauge spokes.

Finding a 26 x 1 3/4 and #13 spokes is not easy.  I was fortunate enough to find a new old-stock rim manufactured by Ukai.

I ordered spokes from Hoshi Kogyo, established over 90 years ago and the only remaining Japanese spoke manufacturer.  #13 gauge spokes come in two varieties:
1. #13 gauge (2.3mm) with a 4.0mm head and 5.3mm neck, these take a #14 size nipple
2. #13 gauge (2.3mm) with a 4.6mm head and 6.0mm neck.

 

The photo below shows from top to bottom:
1. #14 (2.0mm)
2. #13 (2.3mm) with a 4mm head and 5.3mm neck, these take a #14 size nipple.
3. #13 gauge (2.3mm) with a 4.6mm head and 6.0mm neck and take a #13 size nipple..

The photo below shows a comparison between the two different types of #13 spokes (Top is a #13 gauge spoke with threads for #14 nipple, and, bottom is #13 gauge spoke with threads for #13 nipple.)

Since it has been awhile since I last built a wheel, I visited The Master
at his shop and he checked and gave me several invaluable pointers that I would have never come across in any articles or books, things that only come with time and experience.  I am indebted to The Master for his wealth of information.
