2 Speed Internally Geared Hub (Part 3)

Wheel building was completed in "2 Speed Internally Geared Hub (Part 2)" and all that remains is to add an inner tube and tire.

This is the old tire after being removed from the rim.  It is known as a BE (Beaded Edge) tire and you won't find this type of tire at your local bicycle shop since 99% of today's bicycles use "clincher" or  W/O  (Wired On) tires. 

 

BE tires have flaps (or ears) which run along each side of tire.  These flaps wrap around the inner tube forming an excellent protective casing.

Here you can see the white flaps with holes for the valve stem.

This is what a new BE tire looks like. It takes some muscle to fit
a new BE tire onto a rim.

Typically the flaps (white) will have an outline of where the valve hole should be cut.

A "valve hole punch" makes the job easy.

Punch a hole in the flap on each side of the tire.

Align the valve hole on the tire with the valve hole on rim,
and using a tire lever work one side of the tire onto the rim
as shown below. Make certain that the tire valve hole and rim valve hole stay aligned.

Fold the flap inward all the way around the rim so that the bead
is fully seated to the rim.

Insert the inner tube and screw the nut on just a little to prevent the valve from coming out of the valve hole. Using tire levers work the remaining flap onto the rim so that the flap is under the tube.

Check that the bead is properly seated on both sides of the rim.
Pump up the tire.  If any bulges appear it indicates that the tube is not completely encased or that the bead is not properly seated.
Let out the air and refit as necessary.Img_0582
