Workshop (7)

As mentioned in Workshop I have moved and I am in the long process of getting settled in.  In Workshop (1) I gave the workshop a heart by restoring on old bicycle shop clock.  In Workshop (2) I gave the workshop a torso by building a workbench.  In Workshop (3),  the workshop received extremities in the form of tools, and, in Workshop (4) and Workshop(5) I gave the workshop right and left hands by adding a Blacksmith vise and frame vise.  In the last installment, Workshop (6), the workshop received the first of two  legs in the form of a simple but effective front wheel maintenance stand.  In this post, I shall give the workshop its second leg.

Here is the second leg.  A stark difference from the first leg which was a simple lightweight design.  This maintenance and assembly stand weighs in at 20kg!

It is an original Hataya maintenance and assembly stand.
The same stand appears in a 1953 Hataya tool catalog.  It is important to note here that bicycles were shipped as kits to retailers who were responsible for final assembly and inspection.

The bicycle is turned upside down and the handlebars are fitted to the two support rests.  Then the saddle is set down, the weight of the bicycle activates a clamp mechanism which in turn clamps the handlebars in place.  Let's take a closer look.Img_3237_4Img_3250

Here are the two handlebar support rests.
Note the red two pronged clamp.

This is the bicycle set in the stand. When the saddle is set down the weight  of the bicycle releases a clamp mechanism and the red two pronged clamp secures the handlebars in place.

Here is the clamp release mechanism.  The saddle rest acts as a trigger and the weight of the bicycle releases the clamp.

An interesting maintenance and assembly stand.  Of course this stand would not be used on top of the workbench and would be used set on the floor as shown in the photo below.
