2018 Year of the Dog

Many Asian countries follow the Chinese zodiac which is based on a 12 year cycle with each year represented by a specific animal; 2018 is the year of the dog.  Thus, to start off 2018, it is only befitting that the post be associated with man's best friend.。

A few vintage Japanese bicycle models named after dogs include the following．

Note the misspelling of Made in Japan (Maed in Japan).

The last one, Seraph, I actually own.

Seraph was manufactured by Mizutani Ringyo, established in 1926.  Over 90 years later the company is still in business, currently the Mizutani Bicycle Co., Ltd.  and it even has a modern-day  Seraph.。

The name "Seraph" refers to the name given to the Mizutani family's pet, a large German Sheperd which became a trademark appearing on many parts as shown below.。

They don't make them like they used to.

The quality and attention to detail is exquisite.

No wonder the Mizutani Bicycle Co. Ltd and Seraph are still around today.

The design, attention to detail and workmanship of these modest machines make them a true work-of-art.  Hats off to Mizutani Bicycle Co., Ltd and Seraph!

作業部屋（７）

作業部屋の記事で述べたように、
転居後の片付けや整理をほぼ終えて、やっと作業部屋に手を付けられる状況になりました。
今まで作業部屋（１）では、
作業部屋の心臓になる古い自転車屋さんの古時計を直し、
作業部屋（２）では、作業部屋の胴体となる作業台を作り、
作業部屋（３）は、使用時に一時的に体の一部となる「四肢」の工具でした。
作業部屋（４）と（５）では、それぞれ「右手」となる立万力と「左手」となるフレーム万力を与えました。
前回、作業部屋（６） では脚一本となる簡素で実用的な前車輪を地面から持ち上げるメンテスタンドでした。
今回、作業部屋に脚をもう一本与えます。

こちらは２本目の脚となる、メンテナンス兼組立スタンドです。
前回の一本目の脚、軽量でシンプルなメンテナンススタンドと非常に対象的でしょう。
こちらは２０ｋｇもあります。

純正な畑屋メンテナンス兼組立スタンドです。
同一な物は昭和２３年の畑屋カタログに載っています。
当時は自転車組立て及び検査が工場ではなく、販売店で行われていました。

自転車を逆さまにしてハンドルをハンドル受け2本にセットし、サドルをサドル受けに載せると自転車の重量でクランプ が作動し、ハンドルが固定されます。
もう少し詳しく見て見ましょう。

ハンドル受けの2個。
赤い部分がクランプ。

自転車を組立スタンドにセットしたまま。
サドルをサドル受けに載せると自転車の重量で赤いクランプ が作動し、ハンドルを固定します。

クランプの止め装置。
サドル受けがトリガーで自転車の重量にて解除しクランプが作動します。

ハンドルがクランプされた状態。

古い工具は実に面白い。
この組立スタンドは作業台の上ではなく、下記の写真のように床の上で使用されていました。
