Yamaguchi MARUWAI-GO （②Before/After)

In the previous post “Yamaguchi MARUWAI-GO (① Selecting a Project)” I introduced Mr. H　who,　writes:

“I came across your blog two years ago and was deeply moved.  You repeatedly mention that ‛If it was made well in the first place, it will come back to life’.  I took this to heart, found an old Yamaguchi MARUWAI-GO bicycle as my first project.”

We also examined Mr. H's restoration project, a genuine, yet rather weather-beaten old Yamaguchi MARUWAI-GO from around 1951.  We shall now take a look at the results of Mr. H's first restoration conducted in his spare time over the course of six months whilst juggling both family and job.

I am a firm believer that most old things, not only bicycles, but pumps, wooden furniture, weight driven and wind-up clocks (link Japanese only), manual typewriters, rotary lawn mowers  and the like, precisely because they  are simple, sturdy, made of genuine materials and made well (built-to-last) in the first place, as opposed to being disposable, with a little elbow grease can indeed be brought back to life.  

An absolutely amazing job indeed. 
The level of detail is outstanding.

Mr H has clearly proven that "If it was made well in the first place, it will come back to life”.

Hats off to Mr. H and his beloved two-wheeled buddy Yamaguchi MARUWAI-GO.

山口自転車マルワイ號（①プロジェクトの選択）

I'll be back with another English post soon until then stay trued and happy wheels.

前回、「ブリヂストン自転車（①プロジェクトの選択）」で、「オールオリジナル、あまり乗られていなくてかつ保管状態がよいのがレストアプロジェクトピラミッドの頂点」と述べました。

しかし、このようなプロジェクトを見つけられるのは極めて稀です。
レストアプロジェクトピラミッドを下るにつれ、様々な風雨にさらされて壊れて錆だらけのレストアプロジェクトが一般的です。

上の写真はHさんという方から頂きました。
初めてのレストア対象のプロジェクト。

Hさんの言葉を拝借すると、「2年前、このブログを拝見し、大いに感銘を受けました。

狛江市の長寿自転車商会に伺い、店主の谷田部氏に素晴らしい実用車数々を見せて頂きました。
その後、ぼろぼろの山口マルワイ號（上記の写真）を入手し、半年掛けて再生しました。

その際には、このブログの「よいものは必ず甦る」を肝に銘じ、適宜狛江の店主にもご教示を受けました。

自転車を手掛けるのは全く初めてでしたが、このブログやしげP自転車日記など先達のWEBページなどを参考に、作業を進めました。」

Hさんの初めてのレストアプロジェクトと対象になったマルワイ號（昭和26年）の自転車を見てみましょう。

前泥除け

ブラックエナメル塗装が剥がれ、錆びています。

しかし、山口自転車のマルワイ號商標 がまだくっきり。

ヘッドチューブ
塗装が剥がれ、錆びています。.
上部のバッヂはいい状態愛ですが、下部のバッヂはそうではありません。

フォーク、クラウン、前ブレーキ
フォークにテープが巻かれています。
テープが巻かれていると長い歳月でテープが塗装に密着しテープを剥がすと塗装が剥がらてしまう場合が多いです。.
前ブレーキが結構錆びています。

フレーム
ダウンチューブの一部を除いてフレーム塗装が剥がれ落ちています。

ヘッドチューブとダウンチューブのラグ（継ぎ手）上に商標が少ししか残っていません。

フレーム（ダウンチューブ転写マーク）
転写マークは奇跡的に8割以上残っています。

残念なことに右端の一部が剥がれています。

自転車は全体的にぼろぼろですが、Hさんによると、「それでもこの車体を入手したのはダウンチューブ上の転写マーク（科學之精華などと書かれている）が残っている」からだそうです。

確かに綺麗で凝ったデザインや「マルワイ號　高級自轉車」・「（科學之精華」の旧漢字（號⇒号、轉⇒転、學⇒学）が時代を語っています。

フレーム（ボットムブラケット）
塗装が剥がれ落ちています。

ネジ類や金具など錆びています。

 
チェーンケース

前泥除け・フレームと同じように塗装が剥がれ落ちています。
それにしても全体的に凹みはないしバッヂ類もいい状態です。

後ろ泥除け

前泥除け・フレーム・チェーンケースと同じように塗装が剥がれ落ちています。

泥除けステーバッヂの跡が見えます。
転写マークも微かに残っています。

後ろブレーキ

錆だらけ、メッキは僅かしか見えません。

Hさんの山口自転車マルワイ號の状態はいかがですか。

長い歳月に風雨にさらされて、壊れて塗装が剥がれ落ちていて錆だらけですね。

だからと言ってジャンクや鉄のくずと決め付けてはいけません。

それは「よいものは必ず甦る」からです。

次回、Hさんの初めてレストアプロジェクト「山口自転車マルワイ號」にどのくらい命を吹き込めたか見てみましょう。

Yamaguchi MARUWAI-GO （① Selecting a Project)

In the previous post "Bridgestone Bicycle (①　Selecting a Project)" we examined the top of the restoration project pyramid which is to try and find a well-stored, barely ridden, all original bicycle.  These “projects” are extremely rare, and the further down the  restoration project pyramid one goes are the more common weather-beaten, broke-down rusty relics of varying degrees.

I received the following photos and email excerpts from Mr. H describing his first restoration project, shown above.   Mr. H writes:

“I came across your blog two years ago and was deeply moved.  You repeatedly mention that ‛If it was made well in the first place, it will come back to life’.  I took this to heart, found an old Yamaguchi MARUWAI-GO bicycle as my first project.  I visited The Master, Mr. Yatabe at his shop CHOJU JITENSHA SHOKAI (Long Life Bicycle Shop) and he estimated the bicycle to be from around 1951.”

Let's take a closer look at the project. 

Front Fender
Black paint peeling and rusted.
Although rusted, the Yamaguchi MARUWAI-GO trademark is still crisp and clear.

Head Tube
Paint peeling and rusted.
Upper badge (⇐linked page is only in Japanese) is in fairly good shape, right-half of lower badge not so.

Fork, Fork Crown, Front Brake
Fork is taped.
Front brake rusted.

Frame
With the exception of a large portion of the down-tube, ｐaint peeling  all over the frame, original trademark on the head tube - down tube lug only partially recognizable.

Frame (Down Tube)

The transfer is about 80% intact but the far right portion has peeled away. This transfer is one of the main reasons Mr H. decided to select this as his project.

On the transfer, is written　“マルワイ號　高級自轉車” (MARUWAI-GO High-Grade Bicycle)　the use of old-style Kanji  “號⇒号” and “轉⇒転” are clear evidence that the bicycle is definitely just around 1950. But what caught Mr H's eye was the small characters “科學之精華”　which loosely translated means “The fruits  of science” ie, cutting-edge technology.

Frame (Bottom Bracket)
Paint peeling and rusted.
Screws and other hardware also rusted.

Chaincase
Paint peeling and rusted.   Not much original paint remaining.
No major dents, and badges are in relatively good shape.

Rear Fender

Paint peeling and rusted.
Like the front fender and chaincase, more rust than paint.
Can see where the rear fender stay badge was.

Rear Brake

Completely rusted.

Weather-beaten? Yes indeed.

Rusted? Yes indeed.

Paint peeling away?  Yes indeed.

Good for nothing piece of trash?  Not at all.

Beyond restoration?  Not at all.

In the next post we shall revisit this project  and see to what extent Mr H. was able to breath life back into Yamaguchi MARUWAI-GO.
