Note: Special thanks to Mr. Yatabe, owner of CHOJU JITENSHA SHOKAI (Long Life Bicycle Shop) in Komae, Tokyo, who at 93, is still fixing flats and repairing bicycles and kindly shared with me the following information related to bicycle headlamp brackets.
In the previous post "Front Headlamp (Headlight) Part 1" we began taking a look at headlamps. In this post we shall take a look at the five different mounting locations and hardware (headlamp brackets). Pay particular attention to the black and white photos from over 60 years ago, and, note the various headlamp mounting locations.
1. Headlamp bracket fitted to the headset

2. Headlamp bracket mounted on top of the handlebars

The reason for this mounting location is that baskets were introduced and grew in popularity predominantly among ladies bicycles. However, the issue with this mounting location was that when large items were placed in the basket they blocked the light beam.

Side notes:
①Notice where the children ride. In the first photo above the child is riding strapped to the mother's back, and, in the second photo the child is riding seated on a cushion placed atop the rear carrier.
②It is also important to note here that front baskets contributed to the demise of the front fender ornament.
3. Headlamp mounted to front basket
To resolve the above (2.) issue of items in the basket blocking the light beam, headlamps were mounted to the front of the basket.

The setup consisted of a basket bracket (left in photo below) fitted to the headset lamp bracket mentioned in (1.) above, and a basket headlamp bracket (right in photo below) fitted to the front bottom of the basket.

4. Headlamp mounted to front axle
Another mounting location to resolve the above (2.) issue of items in the basket blocking the light beam, was to mount the headlamp to the front axle.
The hole in the bracket is fitted to the right-side of the front axle.

5. Headlamp mounted to handlebar post
This headlamp bracket is very old, dating back to pre-WWII. Compare the design and material thickness of this bracket with the others. It always strikes me that typically, the older something is, the heavier and stronger the item is.
