タイヤ泥落し

昭和時代の自転車や自転車部品のカタログを眺めるのが好きです。
『アイデア考古学』や『工具入れ』でも触れましたが、古いものが現代のものの祖先になっているというのは興味深いことです。
部品の中には継続的な改良によって進化するものもあれば、1959年の部品カタログに掲載されている下の写真のように、単に時代遅れになってしまうものもあるというのは面白いですね。

1950年代に舗装された道路がどれほど少なかったかを考えると、必要性は明白です。
1952年当時、道路全体の14%未満しか舗装されていなかったことを考えてみてください。  

しかし、その割合は1965年には57%、1975年には79%に跳ね上がり、2018年には90%を超えました。
こうして、舗装道路の増加は、タイヤ泥落しの終焉を告げる鐘を鳴らしたのです。

古い物は、時間に冷凍されて当時の時代のデザイン・技術・素材・特徴・機能性・発想等々一見出来るようなタイムマシーンです。

I enjoy browsing through vintage bicycle and bicycle parts catalogs.  I've mentioned it in Idea Archeology and Tool Kits; how old things are the ancestors of today's version.  Interesting how some parts evolve through continuous improvement, while others, like the one below from a 1959 parts catalog, simply become obsolete.

When you consider how few roads were actually paved in the 1950s, the necessity becomes obvious.
Consider that in 1952 less than 14% of all roads in Japan were paved.
 

However, that percentage jumped to 57% by 1965, 79% by 1975 and surpassed 90% by 2018.
Thus, the increase in paved roads sounded the death knell for the mud scraper.

Frozen in time, old things are unique because they are a virtual time machine enabling us to have a glimpse of the design, technology, materials, features, functionality and ideas of their generation.
