Nozawa No. 28 3-Speed Premium Sportster (Part 2)

In the previous post we began our look at an extremely rare Nozawa No. 28 3-Speed Premium Sportster.  This bicycle was discovered tucked away in the far corner of a storage building where it had been asleep for 65 years.  Sportsters like this one became popular in the late 1950s early 1960s as the bicycle trend in Japan shifted from utility to leisure.

Let's start at the front and work our way back. The bicycle is nearly identical to the specifications listed in the 1959 Nozawa catalog shown in Nozawa No. 28 3-Speed Premium Sportster (Part 1)  The photos were taken just as I found the bicycle, just lightly dusted it off and pumped up the tires.

Typical of bicycles from the 1950s and very early 1960s, this bicycle is loaded with the company name and/or trademark appearing on nearly all parts.  First up is the infamous Nozawa fender ornament. Note that the fenders are white with red pinstripes, same as listed in the 1959 specifications.

Rims 26x1-3/8 W/O (Consistent with specifications in 1959 catalog)
Tires are not whitewalls as listed in the 1959 specifications.

ノザワ２８番 内装3段 高級スポーツ車 (第１)

1960年製「能澤製作所・ノザワ自転車工場」、シマノ3段内装変速搭載オールオリジナルデッドストック「28番高級スポーツモデル」の掘り出し物です。
オーナーは手放すなので、６５年前の未使用国産高級スポーツモデルを手に入れるチャンス。

65年間、倉庫の奥深くにずっと眠っていました。
掲載写真は、発見直後に埃を払い、タイヤに空気を入れただけの状態で撮影したものです。
塗装やクロームメッキの状態は年式のわりに良好で、水洗いと軽いコンパウンド磨きを施せば、美しく仕上がることでしょう。

下の写真は、1959年の能澤製作所・ノザワ自転車工場のカタログからです。
カタログには2色のオプションが記載されており、そのうちの一つが「青」（下の写真）で、もう一つが「ライトグレー」（掘り出し物の上の写真）です。

「昭和自転車（モデル類）」で触れた通り、主に1949年から1963年にかけての日本製自転車、とりわけシングルギアのモデルをこのブログで取り上げています。

しかし、この時代の終わり頃には自転車ブームが到来し、特に3段変速モデルの人気が高まるとともに、日本の自転車のトレンドは実用車からレジャー用へと移行し始めました。
この「28番 3段変速高級・スポーツモデル」は、まさにその時期を代表する高級ツーリング車の好例と言えます。
