頻繁に使う物は歳月が経つにつれて味が出ることに気付いたことがありますか。
以前「物に魂が宿るか」で軽く触れました。
特に対象の物は、本物の材質で作られ体に接触する物です。
たとえば、衣服。
衣服は皮膚の一層のようで、着れば着るほど特定の場所で個性が出てきませんか。
愛着があるお気に入りの使い古されたブルージーンズ、革製野球グローブ、革製靴、革製自転車サドルなど。
 

歳月経過とともに繰り返し使用するこによる味（使い込まれ感）や美しさは、しばしば「Beusageビユーセージ」と呼ばれます。

手工具も手作業、例えばネジを回したり、ナットを固定させたり、ネジ山を切ったりすることは、一時的に体の一部になります。
手工具に手を加え作業するからこそ、一時的に身体の延長となるので使い込まれてくるとビユーセージが出ます。 

この「ビユーセージ」は、勿体ない主義よりまるで「勿体ない教」。
モノを大事にして、直しに直して直し切れなくなるまで使用し、もう直し切れなくなったら捨てずにそのモノに尊重及び感謝を示すように別の目的を与えることによって再利用でモノが生まれ変わるのです。
昭和初期~中期は物がない時代で、端切れや廃材などを利用して物を自作していました。
こちらの自転車修理椅子は約７０年前に廃材で作られたもの。
まだまだ現役！！
 

道具箱（第三回）

「道具箱（第1回」では、シートチューブの裏上に取り付けられた金属製の道具箱を取り上げました。
前回の「道具箱（第二回）では、ハンモックサドル専用に設計されていた革製の道具箱を見ました。
今回は、もう一つ珍しい革製道具箱を見ましょう。

高級サドル裏側のストラップ穴に取り付けるように出来ている道具箱です。


表に開け閉め用の金具が付いていません。

少し変わっている断面図。

開け閉めは右側面に付いている革製ストラップで行います。


ストラップは底をスナップで閉じています。
開くには、ストラップを引き下げてスナップを外します。

ストラップを引っぱると工具入れが出てきます。

古い物は、時間に冷凍されて当時の時代のデザイン・技術・素材・特徴・機能性・発想等々一見出来るようなタイムマシーンです。

Tool Kit (Part 3)

In "Tool Kit （Part 1)" we examined a metal tool box that attached directly behind the top of the seat tube.  And, in the previous post, "Tool Kit (Part 2)", we took a look at a tool kit; one made of leather and specifically designed for hammock saddles.  In this post let's take a look at another unique leather tool kit.

This one fastens to the two eyelets provided on the back of high-end saddles.


Note that the front has no open/close fasteners.

Also a unique profile.

A leather strap attached to the side snaps to the bottom to keep the kit closed. 


To open, pull down on the strap to unsnap it.

Pull on the strap.

And the tool kit slides out.

Similar to the hammock saddle tool kit we saw in "Tool Kit (Part 2)"  the inner pouch can be pulled all the way out.

The kit has a set of four tools.

I've mentioned what I like to call "Idea Archeology".  Old things are the ancestors of today's version.  Frozen in time, old things are unique because they are a virtual time machine enabling us to have a glimpse of the design, technology, materials, features, functionality and ideas of their generation.

前回の投稿「道具箱（第1回」では、シートチューブの裏上に取り付けられた金属製の道具箱を取り上げました。
今回は、ハンモックサドル専用に設計されていた革製の道具箱を見てみましょう。
筒型の革製道具箱で、ハンモックサドルのサスペンションコイルの中に差し込むように出来ています。





 

道具箱は二重の筒で出来ています。
つまり、外側筒（本体）と道具入れの内側筒。

道具はオレンジ色の布に包まれています。
その布は道具を固定させ、鳴らない用途と万一途中どこかでメンテすることになったら、その後手拭きができると推定します。

中には小さな油差しと工具４本。

In the previous post "Tool Kit （Part 1)" we examined a metal tool box that attached directly behind the top of the seat tube.  In this post we shall take a look at another tool kit; one made of leather and specifically designed for hammock saddles. 

Here is the leather tubular tool kit specifically designed to fit inside the hammock saddle frame loops.





 

The kit is designed as a tube within a tube.
That is, an outer tube (case) and an inner tube containing the tools.

The tools are wrapped in an orange cloth.
The cloth prevents the tools from jingling and can be used to wipe one's hands after performing any maintenance or repairs.

The kit contains an oiler and set of four spanners.

➀昭和自転車【導入偏】,　②現代の作りと違う【前半】と【後半】で現代の自転車にはない昭和自転車の特徴をある程度までまとめました。
しかし、まだまだ特徴があります。
その一つは金属製の道具箱です。

金属製の道具箱は紳士用自転車にも婦人用自転車にもシートチューブの裏上に取り付けられていました。

昭和30年前後の金属製の道具箱。

黒エナメル塗装と金線引きと金色文字。


左開きでワイヤ取手を上に上げると開きます。


中には小さな油差しと工具４本。

表面に錆がありますが、未使用のようでした。

Tool Kit (Part 1)

In the three videos "➀Vintage Japanese Bicycles (Introduction)",   "②They Don't Make Them Like They Used To (First Half)" and  "③ (Second Half)" I captured some of the features of vintage Japanese bicycles that are no longer commonly found on today's bicycles.  But there are still many others.  One additional feature is the metal tool box (tool kit).

Here is an actual metal tool box dating back to the mid-1950s.

It is black enamel with gold lettering and pinstripes.


It opens from the left side by sliding the wire loop upwards.


The door pivots on hinges, and inside there is a small oiler (oil can) and set of four tools.

There is some rust, but no wear and tear.

In the next English post we shall continue to look at vintage Japanese tool kits.

サス付き革製サドル（第十一回）

今まで「サス付き革製サドル第一回」，「第二回」，「第三回」，「第四回」,「第五回」,「第六回」の記事で、
昭和20年代後半～30年代前半の革製サドル６種類800系、750系 、900系、500系、600系と1300系それぞれを見て来ました。

そして、前の四つの記事（第七回）,（第八回），（第九回）,　（第10回）で、
サス付き革製サドルの手入れ用の専用手工具、ハンモックサドル用の「皮張り器」と「バネ開き器」と「サドル（メガネ）レンチ」と「サドルナット(移し替え）スッパナー」を見て来ました。

今回は、兼用工具を見てみましょう。

下図のように手工具の上半分は「ブレーキレバーナットスパナー」、下半分は「サドルワニナットスパナー」です。

繰り返しになりますが、上半分はブレーキレバーナットに使用されます。
これについては、今後の投稿で取り上げます。

そして、今回取り上げる下半分の「サドルワニナットスパナー」です。
もう少し見てみましょう。


ワニ口のような受け部は、さまざまなナットサイズに対応するように設計されています。

フラットで薄型プロファイルを備えているため、狭いサドルバネのコイルの間に入りやすいです。


「サドル（メガネ）レンチ」 と比較すると、この「サドルワニナットスパナー」は1本で様々のサドルナット類に適合し、ナットのサイズを気にする必要はありません。

コイルの間にワニ口の歯がナットの角に接触するまで挿入させるだけです。

歯はサドルナットの角を食い込み、空回りを防ぎます。



フラットで薄型プロファイルと、スパナーのサイズとナットのサイズを合わせる手間が省けて「サドルワニナットスパナー」は、サドルナットの緩めと締め付けを大幅に容易にします。

サドルを分解したり再組み立てしたりする時、便利な手工具です。

Sprung Leather Bicycle Saddles (Part 11)

In the first six posts, Sprung Leather Bicycle Saddles (Part 1), (Part 2),  (Part 3)，(Part 4), (Part 5) and (Part 6) we took a look at various leather saddle styles from the 1950's: (800 series), (750 series), (900 series)，(500 series), (600 series) and (1300 series) respectively.  And, in the previous four posts (Part 7) , (Part 8) , (Part 9) and (Part 10) we looked at tools used to maintain sprung leather saddles, specifically the "hammock saddle stretcher", "saddle spring spreader" , "saddle box end wrench" and the "saddle nut transfer spanner".

In this installment we shall take a look at a dual purpose tool.

As shown in the illustrations below, the top half is a brake lever nut spanner, and, the bottom half is an "alligator saddle nut spanner".

Again, the top half used for brake lever nuts as we shall see in detail in a future post. 

And, the bottom half, is an "alligator saddle nut spanner".
Let's take a closer look.


The alligator mouth-like opening is designed to accommodate assorted nut sizes.

The tool has a flat thin profile enabling it to easily fit in between the narrow spring coils.


Compared to the "saddle box end wrench" this "alligator saddle nut spanner" is a one-size fits all tool, no need to worry about what size the nuts are.

Simply slide it in between the coils until the teeth make contact with the nut.

The teeth instantly bite the corners of the applicable nut; thereby preventing any chance of slipping.


With its thin flat profile, and, unique alligator mouth-like opening which eliminates the need to match spanner size with the size of the nut, the "alligator saddle nut spanner" greatly facilitates loosening and tightening saddle nuts. 

Definitely a handy little tool to have when disassembling and reassembling saddles.

今回は、「サドルナット(移し替え）スッパナー」という手工具 を見てみましょう。（左の工具） 

「サドルナット(移し替え）スッパナー」

サドルを組み立てる時に、バネをサドルに固定するナットを移動して締めるために使用される工具です。

全体が薄くて、ちょうどいい角度になっているため、狭いバネ・コイルの間に入ります。

一端はナットを一時的に保持できるようにネジ山が切ってあります。

もう一端はナットを締め付ける用です。

（12mmナット用）

ナットを一端に取り付けて、バネ固定用のボルトに移し替えるまでの落下防止。

ちょうどいい角度になっているため、狭いバネ・コイルの間に入りやすくてナットを工具からボルトに移し替えができます。

移し替えたらもう一端を使用してナットを締めます。

「サドルナット(移し替え）スッパナー」は、サドルを組み立てる時に便利な工具です。

次回は、
革製サドルの手入れで使用する別の手工具を取り上げます。
